Top Tips for Trimming Hedges

by | May 9, 2022 | Hedges

Are your shrubs or hedges overgrown? Do you keep meaning to cut them down but shy away because you might do it wrong? In this article, we share our top tips for trimming hedges.

Electric Hedge Trimmer

Most homeowners require nothing more than an electric hedge trimmer. Bosch and Black and Decker brands produce great quality cordless and corded hedge trimmers for domestic use. We suggest an electric hedge trimmer over hedge shears because making hedges flat and straight is easier.

Bottom-Up

We suggest starting from the bottom of the shrub or hedge and working your way up, making a window wiper motion on the slowest setting without intermittent breaks. Take your time to trim small amounts at home time and focus on keeping the trimmer flat.

Several Passes

It’s okay to go over the same area several times. In fact, it’s best to do it because parts of the hedge or shrub bounce back after the initial pass, which results in an unsmooth finish. This is the same case for the top of the shrub or hedge.

Trimming More Towards the Top

Most shrubs tend to die towards the bottom because they lack sunlight. This is often the case when the top of the hedge or shrub is a perfect rectangle. Therefore, trim more of the top of the hedge or shrub on the side to allow sufficient sunlight to reach the lower areas during the day.

Mrs Mattcocks

Defeated by a ground elder, beaten by a large conifer hedge we sought help. Sue and her Team impressed us from the start with their technical knowledge, skill and sheer hard work. Within three years they have worked their magic, and we are now enjoying a garden hitherto undreamed of. We find their suggestions and input not only helpful but lasting. This is a team of people who lovingly put Mother Nature in her place. THANK YOU.”
